Where to start your NewSpace job search

Over the past decade, there has been an explosion in the number of NewSpace companies. “NewSpace” is a nebulous term that general refers to entrepreneurial space companies who are not reliant on large government contracts.

Given how many companies there are, it can be hard to know where to even start the job search. Fortunately, Seraphim Capital has put together this map of the space technology ecosystem, which highlights companies they find to be particularly promising. It’s also a great starting point to begin a job search in the commercial space sector.

Here’s a similar infographic from Bessemer Venture Partners:

For planetary scientists, I suggest focusing on the following sectors in the map. Where you fit in depends on your specific skillset, but companies in these categories would be a good start:

  • Space exploration & resources

  • Space research

  • Space infrastructure

  • Satellites

  • Insight & monitoring

  • Mapping

  • Data platforms
